Yuki can be seen on posters, short film, movie trailers, tshirts, bags, cds, books, art...it's pretty awesome how far you can take just a single character.

I also like how they've kept the same style but tweaked it up more in the second trailer. The 3D and 2D elements works well, I can really imagine it becoming a movie now.

Trying to be one with nature

One of my goals this year is to do more creative things outside of work. I recently went to the Berwick Botanical Gardens and Healesville Sanctuary and took some snaps of flowers and animals. Healesville hasn't changed that much since I was a kid, and majority of the animals kind of sleep all day which is kind of lame. At least when its ferocious lions and majestic elephants its kind of cool to be in their presence...but kangaroos and koalas not so much...

Hi everyone,

Hope you have all been well!

Looking back on 2011 it has been a pretty interesting year. I said goodbye to my job, my bum life and said hello to my first design job at Woof Creative. I feel very lucky to have landed this job. I've had a few design interviews in the past and its rare to find a place which has exactly the right environment and people you are looking for. The real surprise I could say was landing into the Advertising stream. It wasn't something I thought about during uni but I'm kind of glad it worked out this way. Kind of opened new doors for me...and hopefully be one step closer to what I really want (which is ? atm)

As well as the highs of landing this job, I also got to see some amazing sites in Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, got to meet some pretty cool people and made some pretty awesome friends along the way.

But as the saying goes, with every high there's gotta be a low too, and for me there were times which were pretty difficult. The transition between bum life to full time work was never easy, and finding that balance between work, family, friends and personal time was definitely a struggle. Nevertheless 8 months on, I think I'm slowly getting the hang of it.

I've also managed to shake off my obsession with Kpop Music (sad to say it was an obsession). Not saying it was a low point of my life but listening to the music again it's not as great as I remembered it to be. Putting good looking, skinny, stylish idols in flashy music clips with auto tuned beats definitely sucked me in! I still have my favorites but I can finally move on from that phase in my life. Perhaps it's a small step to growing up? and getting old....time for some Buble please.

So now to look forward to 2012 filled with over time, old age, bad eyesight and better experiences to come.

Hi all, it's been a while but I've got some news:

x DESIGN 9-5 JOB PLEASE

YEAH! I'd give a proper update on my job but my brain has sort of deflated from exhaustion. Perhaps when I get used to the lifestyle I'll give a rundown of what I do.

The reason I actually wanted to update my blog is cause when I was in Hong Kong, I got a new macro lens :). I'm not really that great at photography, but it's definitely something I want to pursue and get better at. I've also started my random doodles again so I might update that onto here too.

The thing I love about this lens is how close you can get up to things. Animals are generally the hardest things to take, so seeing their fin/fur/feathers up close is pretty awesome. And when I mean animals...I mean fish haha, I don't have any pets to take photos of ...

I can't believe it. It's been almost 5 years since I left high school. Crazy ey? I'm 21 years old and I'm at the stage where I'm starting to reflect on my life. People are getting married, engaged, working full time, going overseas to work...it's so. old. Seems like it was yesterday that I had my first day of orientation at uni and now I've completed my Honours degree, 4 years like that. Sounds like a mid year crisis? Quarterly crisis lol? But I think it's about time I set new goals for myself. Hopefully I won't age in the process as I figure out what I want my 2011 to be.

Knock Knock

I was at work today and came across these products by Knock Knock. The post it's are really clever as it pretty much takes the words from your mouth and puts it on a post it.

"Knock Knock seeks to integrate art and commerce—creating original, authentic, noncynical products that support themselves in the marketplace so that we don’t have to deal with “clients.”"

I've noticed a lot of stationery companies are starting to think about the function of things and how they communicate with their target audience. Typo is starting to have a lot of quirky/crazy/crude stuff lol. Funny how their logo looks like kikki except they are more wit less swiss.

Finally finished my Jap elective HOORAH! Now major project time~

Decided to cut out and collate all my images together. I was quite surprised I had so many! I chose the best ones to categorize and took photos of my mood board. My room has the worst lighting so please forgive the sepia hues!

I had a discussion with the class last week and they suggested that my brand could expand outside of cards. Pete suggested that I should design things that were another alternative to communicating with people.

Some ideas they had were:

-Ipod application
-MMS
-Email E greeting
-Postcards
-Emoticons
-IOU coupons
-Magnets

I think the post it's would be a great idea as people can post it on their computers, fridges, notice boards to communicate with the next person who sees it. Here's some images I collated for post its:

October update:
For the past few weeks I've been pretty much been coming up with concepts for cards and not so much the stylization of the drawings. I've been a bit lost on how to draw them, but I think the best way for me to execute this is to not limit myself to a certain style. I like to design things according to the brief, so my illustration style tends to change a lot. I've gathered some images which I thought would best capture my ideas- focusing on how the illustrator has captured the characters personality.

Had a killer week with the first part of my Jap Exam so I've kinda been neglecting my card blog for the past few days (will get onto it tomorrow though). Things I will focus on next week:
- card materials (trip to paper point)
- start finalizing my designs
- finesse my sketches
- figure out good prices
- investigate gocco machine

Peter said I should charge them cheap but mass produce it like crazy. Nice cards are pretty expensive and since my cards aren't really used for a particular occasion, people may be more willing to buy them cause they look cool (therefore buy more! hopefully....) Definitely something worth thinking about :)

Oh here's some friendly typography I found by 'steph says hello'. Not sure if it's for cards, but it would be really cool if it was!

Hrm 2 posts in one night.

I've been contemplating buying a gocco machine for this project.

Only problems are:

Ink is bound to run out
Apparently the bulbs give u cancer...(as long as you don't touch it!)
It will have to be an awesome design for me to mass produce it (will my designs be in demand?)

Other than that, it looks really fun :D Plus I can keep it forever and use it for other stuff.

Hello!
Long time no update. Well, things have been getting busier and busier. So many things to take into consideration and time is flying by me as usual.

So I've been wondering how I could document my process of this card business. Although I do have a blog specifically for my major project, I don't really want it to be filled with heavy text & imagery resources. I want it to be purely my work. Thus I've decided to do all my rambling here, on my other blog which serves no purpose at the moment. Hopefully my tutors won't get confused!

Here's the first moodboard I made. It has a mixture of cartoons I like, character brands, interesting cards (and games) and also my collab work of the monash teachers.

Really crappy moodboard but you get an overall idea of the feel I want for this business.

GOAL:
End of October: Have finalised designs (purchase gocco machine!?)
November til due date: Design online shop.
22nd of Nov: Be open for business and live a stress free life :)

It will be purely local so I won't have to worry about ABN for the moment :)

Ahoy ahoy!
Just wanted to link my greeting cards blog here which is part of my major project:

Goal is to churn out a drawing everyday. Decided to call my company Looi, cause it reminds me of the cards I made with Liz last year. (Hui and Looi...Get it? Ha.) Also it promotes me as an illustrator according to Bec :) Atm I'm concentrating on experimenting with the style of my drawings. Should go on for about 2 weeks. Hopefully I'll be able to look at paper stocks, packaging and printing methods after that (so tempted to buy a gokko machine!)

To do list:

Research - Existing companies. What makes them good, cool, bad etc. Price ranges. Also look at illustrators, character branding companies.

Card survey- Why do people buy them? Keep them? What makes them special?
Total of 93 people took the survey (I feel very loved)

Make a blog - Post a drawing every day to promote cards, churn out designs & documentation. Eventually will sell them off site.

Brainstorming exercises with Meanwhile & target market- Situations where people would buy cards. Create designer challenges for myself which involve the public.

Experiment with media and styles - Materials I want to explore are collage, copics, vector, colour schemes & vintage theme.

Make a Facebook group/photo album - Still not sure if I should do this one yet. Might create one when I have more grounded designs

Hello. I've realised I haven't really written what my major project is about.

Here's a little back story to it. So I've been working at David Jones and Kikki K for a while now and I've realised that mostly the older generation buy cards. (eg: grannies, mums, office men) If young people do, it's mostly girls, as most cards are usually cute and pretty. And when young people want cards, they usually can't find any cause they are really tacky and plastered with glitter. I've also noticed that whenever I mention cards to people they usually aren't very excited about it.

So my duty as a victim of sms and fb happy bday messages is to make cards cool for our generation. COOL being the key word. So far I haven't done that much ^^', but you can see my progress in the next post.

Oh on the topic of cards, here's a card company which I thought was pretty cool, a similar concept to what I want to do.

Although I'm not a huge fan of the design, what makes it really special is that the slogans are all everyday terms and relates to most people in our age group. It uses humour a lot, which I think makes it successful. Steph said you can find them in General Pants Co, trendy retailer for a trendy market.

So that's my proposal. I was actually only intending to post about the company I found but somehow ended up talking about my project lol. I hope it gives you an insight to what I'm doing and sounds more interesting then how I would describe it in person ^^'

Pixel avatars of the class for one of my briefs. We all went out to watch Summer Wars and I told them to reflect on the day. We played that game where you have to write what you remember and get the next person to draw it and so forth. The pictures for it are on the Meanwhile blog. Since the anime is based on avatars/virtual reality, thought it would be cool to make pixel avatars for the class. (Luckily we have 5 in total haha) Some of their interpretations of the drawing/writing turned out weird so I thought I could try and incorporate it into the avatars. Here is a rough sketch of the avatars being animated.

I have finally decided on my major project for Honours.

I've been thinking long and hard the past couple of days on what I want to get out of my honours program. What do I want to showcase after I graduate? What am I passionate about? I came up with two ideas which I thought would be interesting to pursue.

First idea was to ask somebody to write a short story for me which I can produce into a short animated clip. I've kind of been thinking about this idea for a while and also had a writer lined up. Only problem was he's super busy atm and creating a animated story from scratch in under 7 weeks doesn't seem possible (especially with my limited animation skills haha). But the idea of having the writer be my client seems like a interesting project. I wasn't too keen on writing it cause...I lack imagination...apparently lol.

So scratch that idea. The other idea I has was to create a business. Since most things have been done, I've decided to start up a greeting card company. Yeah it's kind of random haha, but I've always liked making cards for people. I've always thought personalized cards are the best. Something that the reciever will appreciate and keep for ages. It's rare for people to keep cards for a long time, so if i can somehow find a way for people to keep these products then that would be my selling point for this business.

I was writing up my brief for this project and I think I'm gonna cry haha. There's so many things I need to do. Research > Business strategies > Experimenting > Implementation > Documentation along the way...

Yes I've been thinking about it for the past week so this post is pretty wordy and homework sounding lol. Regardless of the obstacles I'll face these next few weeks, I'm sure this will be a fun and interesting project.

In other news I saw Tim Burton's exhibition!! So worth the wait I think I have a new idol :D I think I might go again cause it was that awesome :)

I also heard Disney is coming to ACMI at the end of the year! Awesome year for ACMI!!!!

So on Sunday I went to the Melbourne International Film Festival at Acmi with my class to watch Summer Wars. The storyline is kind of hard to explain but what made it so awesome was that the animation was absolutely incredible! Reminded me of Murakami x Spirited Away animation. And the avatar characters were so freaking cute! Check out the trailer here ^^

I'm gonna make sure I go to these international films in the future :)

This film got me thinking about my major project. I still haven't decided what I'm doing yet :S Leaning towards exploring the relationship with animation and graphic design. Sounds kind of theoretical compared to what the others are doing...they all have client jobs!

So yes I'm back at uni now! And I've realized that my sleeping pattern has officially deteriorated -_-

Today I slept in til 1:30 cause I've been so exhausted. I've pretty much been coming home late for the past...5 days? No no I haven't been partying hard (I'm too cool for that :P) but just trying to balance work and uni has worn me out. The other day I realized that I've been working around 4-5 days a week for 9 weeks in a row...wth O_O. No wonder I have permanent panda eyes and bad skin >< Also been eating out alot...dam city lifestyle and winter weight. Curse you!

I think I've been overdoing my skincare routine as well haha..maybe I should lay off the skin care products for a while...

In other news I now have a 24inch monitor!! Bye bye square 19 inch! I dunno how I did my design work on you all this time.

I've also decided to make a website for my work (sometime this semeste lol). Gotta get my head in the game! Design graduate and soon to be Honours graduate...I think it's about time I became a serious designer *power fist!

Went to St Kilda for a day trip with my family over the holidays and took this shot.

It wasn't that dark when I took it, but the sunset was so beautiful. I don't remember the last time I saw the sun so red. Even people who were jogging around stopped for a second and watched the sunset. Ah, nature.

Design Expo

Yesterday I went to the DESIGN; MADE; TRADE expo.

Not really sure what my expectations were of it, but it was definitely an eye opener to the design industry. Although there wasn't any graphic design/print stuff (bit disappointing), it did have a lot of interesting product and fashion design businesses. The thing I found the coolest was the textile materials! Very innovative, green friendly and fun to touch xD

Another cool thing (lol cool is such a hip word) was that all the stalls were made out of cardboard! Definitely green fever is in the air.

I also got the Melbourne design guide for $20! Was suppose to be $40 rrp and said $30 at one of the stalls. Luckily as I exited my friend spotted one for $20! Bargain. Now I can now look up Melbourne's design studios and stalk them now HEHE

Anyway back to uni this week. Kind of excited cause I'm sick of working everyday (although moolah is awesome). Be great to see everyone and do more client projects ^^v Gotta get the jackpot this year!!!

Things that have happened over the past month

B'day with DA BOSS, girls and salary men hehe. Not the clearest photo but it has the nicest lighting :) Thanks to everyone who came ^^

Got a DSLR for my b'day! Thank you guys :) As Jordan would say; "Not owning a SLR camera is like not owning a pencil for a design student." So true. lol

Received the coolest b'day video ever LOL. They made a parody of Taeyang's Wedding Dress MV. I'm tempted to post the video on facebook but some of them might kill me. ^^" When I saw this I couldn't help but laugh. Can't believe they spent 2 months practicing this for my video without my knowledge. So cooool next time include me in guys :D

Dear chief has gone to Singapore to work for 2 years SIGH. This is from her farewell party/pre new years night. We gave her a cheki to congratulate her new job and she gave us well, korean stuff for her farewell ^^ Taken with my SLR yay!

Went site seeing with my cousin from Malaysia. Ate so much food that day, was so fat. Went around David Jones, Flinders Lane, ACMI Screen world at Federation Square, Rod Laver Arena tour (I was in the presence of Federer phwoar!) and Imax. Was fun being a tourist :) There's actually a lot to do (when it comes to eating and not worrying about money lol)

Also took these cool shots with my canon digi camera.

Went to Phillip Island with my family and relatives. Saw the fairy penguins (who remind me of Tif lol!), some seaside places and went to Amaze and things. Was a lot better then I thought it would be, plus it's awesome for photo whoring lol

So yeah that's pretty much a brief summary of June so far. Now that chief and my relatives are gone I guess life is back to normal SIGH. Busker for an hour

Has taken a RISK!

For uni we have this project where we have to do "Something that we've never done before". After bailing out of becoming a ninja for a day lol, I decided to become a busker for one hour. Since you need a license to busk, I decided to give out free drawings instead (like free hugs man). Ended up getting a free hug, gum and an email address lol. Was pretty cool! Although I am surprised nobody likes free things...PEOPLE ITS FREE...FREE! My goal was 10 people but I only managed to get 8. 8 people in one hour x 5 minutes each = 40 minutes of drawing time. That's still pretty awesome. I think if I had a bigger sign and perhaps approached people I would have gotten more. Haha oh well~

Thanks to "Silent" Steph for helping me out today (even though you kept laughing at my pastry hat drawing) and to the 8 lucky people who I drew pics for. Was nice meeting you all~!

Now I'm motivated for doujicon! This time I'll make money :D I also gotta improve on my speed drawing. Everyone I drew today has my generic face drawings lol.

Today is my last day of mid sem holidays. I didn't realise rmit LITERALLY only had one week of holidays including easter, fail rmit! I guess having holidays on public holidays makes up for it hurhur...

Hrm I haven't really got much to say. Uni is going well, a little TOO well. I'm so used to being stressed and having multiple deadlines but everything seems to be going smoothly. (Monash you have trained me well!) Although it is week 6, I'm starting to get worried about my portfolio, hopefully things move faster! Although we have a few briefs happening atm it feels like I've barely done anything. Can't believe I'm wanting more work lol. Perhaps my unemployment might be contributing to my smooth sailing lifestyle...I'm so not used to this O_O"

On a different note, here is some stuff I've done over the past few weeks. B'day cards galore!

Bekinator's Birthday Card - Full 6 page printout of MX imitation "BX" (clever ey?) Mastermind JD was behind the concept. It was a fun layout exercise although it was a lot more time consuming then I had anticipated -_- My favourite part is the fashion fix (Aaron and JD's fashion tips lolol have a read!) and the badly photoshopped pic with everyone. Design graduates would be proud :)

Helllllo!

Just to let you know I've signed up for Doujicon this year with Steph and Liz! For those who don't know what it is it's a convention where artists gather together to sell their work :) I was thinking about drawing KPOP IDOLS hahaha! Sadly I have been swept up in the craze but I think it would be a popular thing to sell (and it might outsell anime >:D) I'll also do my own stuff just so people don't think i'm just some weird fangirl lol. Also tables are cheap cheap cheap compared to manifest so we'll definitely be able to earn profit :D

Wow it's been way too long since I've done a proper illustration job. I finally had an idea for a poster I was meant to do ages ago....

Basically my family friend wanted a poster of domesticated animals since she teaches animal sciencey stuff. I had a massive art block on this project cause well, I forgot how to draw cool animals. Last time I was really into animal drawings was in primary school lol. My idea is basically to draw lanky and fat looking animals dancing...

Not exactly genius lol -_-

Next step is colours and stylization. Been so long since I've colour co-ordinated things or drawn for that matter. I don't think I've improved much lol. I want it to be kinda retro and designer looking, so maybe I'll seek to Shag for my inspiration :D Love his colour schemes.

I will post my final design soon once my brain starts to function properly. (damn sleep deprivation...)

I had my first classes today. Was pretty interesting :) My course consists of 6 people LOL. And the building is sooo awesome!

I've realised that this year one of my main goals is to learn a language! I feel so deprived knowing nothing -_- So my goal is to learn and understand either korean, japanese or chinese (although i've given up on chinese already lol) by the end of this yr. I already know bits and pieces of each but it's not good enough D:

Prehaps learning a language will be my new hobby from now on ^^"

Avatar Love!

Over the weekend I borrowed the Avatar series off my friend. And I must say...IT WAS SO AWESOME!

It took me a while to get into it, as the first few episodes were a bit slow (also it reminded me of english dubbed in the beginning ><) But as you watch more of it, it seriously gets addictive! I think what makes this show really good is that it had a good balance of everything. Captivating storyline, likeable characters, action packed animation and light hearted humor. I found it really interesting that each character had their own hidden turmoil, which kinda made it much more deeper and complex than I had imagined. Their struggles reflected a lot on life and some things I've experienced, so yeah I found that really cool :) It was also surprisingly funny! Or maybe I just have a immature sense of humor :P But yeh, some of the stuff the characters say are hilarious! Kinda reminded me of The Weekenders. Witty light sarcasm bits. I think my favorite character has got to be Sokka. He's so dorky with his lame one liners. He's so cool in my eyes *_*

Another thing that really caught my eye was the animation. Although it uses a lot of anime elements, I'm so glad they didn't use cute anime chibi expressions!!!! I think the one thing that annoys me about anime is that when they make expressions, the face is so exaggerated that they lose their noses, eye pupils and proportions. It's cute and funny sometimes but it doesn't really make the animation unique or artistically creative in my opinion. I must sound like a nerd analysing stuff like that lol, but yeh I'm SO glad avatar didn't do that :) And the fight scenes were absolutely epic. The animation was so smooth and so much detail was put into it (particularly the final fight scene)

Yes, overall I loved it lol. It really inspires me to draw again. Hopefully one day I'll have the oppurtunity to draw characters for something just as great as this series. For now maybe fanart will do hehe

Ahhh I wrote heaps for once and it sounds like a review kinda! But I'm so glad I spent 2 days straight watching it. It was so worth it :D:D:D:D

HOORAH I finished the IOU booklet after 3 months she celebrated her b'day. Kudos to JD and Jordan for helping me :) My binding was pretty fail. Had to tape it twice because I didn't do it properly >< BUT lukily the birthday girl isn't a design student lol. ALSO some of the pics were pixeled :(:(

I've still got one last part of the present to do. I'm not sure when she'll get this lol, as I want to make this one the best that I can! (Plus it's the first time I've ever drawn on sneakers ^^)

Besides delayed presents, still working on my Oziental Gourmet Food designs. Not exactly the most exciting brief, but gotta do what I can I guess :)

Was suppose to finish this months ago but just got sidetrack with work, kpop, road tripping and deadly Melbourne heatwaves. In other words PROCRASTINATION ><". More parts to go. Finally completed my Kris Kringle!

Camera quality is awful :( MUST HUNT FOR A SLR!

Anyway the doll is around 150mm and took around 6 hours to make. I think getting the hair right was the hardest! I put a phone strap on it, in case she wants to hang it somewhere. Hopefully she'll like it. Also got her a pocket watch necklace so she can tell me what time it is :D (Hopefully she doesn't read this hoho)

Sadly I haven't had time to complete most of the design stuff due to work -_-. The one thing I did finish however was this thank you card for my friend. Kinda looks like him, sorta lol. Probably the asian eyes and stubble are accurate haha.

End of Year Exhibition Opening

Wow. Three years.

Last Friday night was the opening of Monash's Art and Design students! It was a great night and turn out was HUGE. Was amazed at how many people attended. Probably the highlight of the night for me was giving the teachers our thank you cards; made by Liz and myself :) Their reactions were priceless (got a good chuckle or two out of it), was definitely worth it. Was pretty fun to make, perhaps caricatures is our calling ey?

Thinking about it now has made me feel sad. Everyone's going their seperate ways now. Wish we were able to take a group photo and also photos with the teachers (with our thank you cards hehe). Too bad my camera was upstairs and everyone was scattered everywhere. Ah well. Hopefully opportunities will come, and we'll be able to get together again :)

Thanks to all who came and supported us. Hopefully there will be many more to come :)

As for now, I guess it's time to maintain this blog (properly) haha. I'll be keeping in touch with updates every now and then so pop by if you can. ^^

To celebrate finishing uni we went to the ACMI - Screen Worlds. Had heaps of interactive things to play with! One of them was the Matrix room where you are surrounded by cameras and when the beeper went off, you had to pull a pose.

Here are the main spots where you can drag and drop your items onto Wilbur. To differentiate them from the scenery, I outlined it in black to make it easier for the player to spot them. Each item when dragged over his head makes Wilbur change expressions- either happy or sad face. To wake him up I decided to just make the player poke him on the belly as I had a bit of trouble getting the sound items to sync with his reactions.

I didn't get a chance to visit the Dali exhibition this year, kind of wish I did now (HA it's been a regretful year ^^") The one piece I wanted to see was this animation by Dali and Disney. Thankfully I found it off youtube. It really is something. Makes me want to draw for fun again. The style of the animation is undoubtedly theirs (even if it had to be finished off by someone else). So trippy and dreamy :)

It's 3am! (yay?)

Looks like I didn't do anything haha...BUT i did :)
A couple of days ago. Got the:
-tree to shake and mashmallow drops down (extremely fast -_-)
-tamborine to make a sound
-cauliflower to drag
-background to move ie. clouds, sun, river
-animated wilbur sleeping
-right scroll

Problems so far:
-right scroll goes on forever!
-cauliflower doesnt release on dropper
-trouble ordering animation order ie. tree shakes, mashmallow drops, mashmallow drag and drops onto stego, stego face changes

You guys sure make actionscript look easy D: D: D:

Hopefully with more practise (and patience) i'll get it right.

Wow time sure has flown by! Been so busy and sleep deprived lately z_z

Well for the final project, I was thinking of doing an interactive flash about feeding and waking up Wilbur. The narrative will kind of begin with the user trying to wake him up with various objects. Once woken up, you have to feed him and he will express certain emotions and feelings. Once completed, the drums of war will be played which will lead onto the story of the epic battle between sweet, savoury and bitter. My character will be similar to winnie the pooh since they are both chubby and happy ^^ Here is a basic sketch of what I'm thinking about...

Hopefully soon enough I'll be able to load up my walk cycle on youtube. Been trying lately and it's not working argh D:

Ha, this post will look very similar to Liz's...oh well. Must document regardless!

Last Thursday, Me, Liz and Steph went to two exhibitions! I felt very cultured indeed :P

First exhibition we went to was Len Lye at ACMI. It was actually homework for our theory essay, but it was really interesting to visit! The exhibition featured lots of his work, ranging from the different mediums and practices he did. I particularly liked his films using painted film strips and Cuban music. Was really trippy to watch...so mesmerizing with the patterns and jazzy music.

He also designed some kinetic sculptures during his later years. The grass one was soooooo soothing. It swayed from side to side, I think we were in a trance for ages haha...

After leaving Len Lye, we decided to take photos! It's a shame we couldn't take any inside, but we did take some of the sign...yes we are cool.

After taking photos, our next stop during our designer kids outing was...Rock Paper Laser! I must say, I am a fan of anything which features character design and lasers. Good work Troy!

Design // Chraracter - Meet Wilbur

Meet Wilbur the stegosaurus.
He is sweet, happy, kind and shy.
His skin is a gummy texture and is made out of waffles, lollypops, sprinkles and candy canes.
Kind of dopey but has a good heart (And a good appetite)
Likes salsa dancing and his favourite musical instrument is the tambourine.
Loves marshmallows but hates snails (I don't blame him.)
When he is angry his lollypop cheeks changes colour.
He will also hit you with a pocky stick if you call him fat.

Phew finished. Was fun though :)
Wish I wrote more for the description heh...oh well

Urgh this week has been a killer >.>
I think the annual report killed me. It wasn't too hard just SO time consuming... Four days straight of being a hermit. Can't believe I left it til the last minute...again T_T

Can't relax though, time for multimedia!

Character Profile:
For our group, we decided to each design a dinosaur from the different sections of the world. I got the sweet dinosaur who will be a stegosaurus :D

Hrm, the only famous stegosaurus I know is Spike from the Land before time. From what I imagine stegosaurus's must've been pretty dopey and slow...must be the walnut size brain lol

Character/Style Inspiration:
Really hard to find cool dinosaur character designs online! (I'm not sure why O.O) I can find cute dinosaurs but they are all so ordinary looking. Although I do like these ones hehe ^SO CUTE
Probably the closest thing I can find to unique looking monster stuff is pokemon and digimon :)

Probably not the best pic, but I do love looking at sprite characters :) So mini and pixelated. I forgot how many pokemon they have O_O ... and they are all weird looking! I found a few which I would like my character to look like. I'm thinking it should be more anthro then a traditional stegosaurus since it lives in sugarpot houses hehe. So it's intelligence must be pretty advanced :P

I always find deviantart a good source for inspiration :) Although these days the most popular artworks is anime fan art -_-

Anyway one of the artists I watch is enkana (deviantart / blog)
Her work is gorgeous :) The style is so simple, yet the saturated colours and expressions on her characters convey a sweet and innocent appeal...if that makes sense haha ^^"

These screenshots are from the game Castle Crashers on xbox 360! Characterisation wise, this is probably one of the coolest games i've ever seen :D I've only played it once, but the 2d scrolling effect, mulitplayer game play and cute characters are really enjoyable to play! I love how expressive the characters are, looks more like a animated cartoon compared to other games out there!

Swords and Soldiers: I've mentioned this game before in previous posts...but I think i'll mention it again! Basically the game is about picking a tribe and fighting each other. The characters are really cute and the gameplay looks insane O.O You can pick from vikings, chinese dynasty or aztec people.

Urgh, my art blog has been so dead lately ;_;
To revive it again, I've decided to make this my art inspiration/multimedia studio assessment blog (hoorah!)

Currently I'm doing my first flash project based on fantasy worlds. Me, liz, keisuke and milkman decided to do a food/prehistoric world filled with salty, bitter and sweet dinosaurs. Should be awesome :D Been waiting for 3 years to do flash animation omgosh...

Currently we are up to the research stage for the mood board. I guess my previous post can be included as food inspiration too :]

I also found the work of POSTGAL- an animation company from Hong Kong. Their work is so unbelievably cute, and their characters are kinda dopey looking lol. They also created my blog baby which I think is dieing due to me not feeding it...

The thing I love about postgal's characters is probably the line work. It really has that hand drawn aesthetic which works well with the colour palette and fluidity of the animation :)

Plan C - Manifest process

So far, i've only made two plush keyrings (which are kinda dodged -_-). They are meant to be screen cleaners as well (thanks to lizo!) I watched totoro today finalllly...and was inspired to make one :) The white one was suppose to be the ghost totoro, but the shape was kinda weird so i just drew arms on it.

Hrmm, I kinda ran out of anime mascots to make. If you any suggestions on what people would buy(or what you like xD) let me know and also what price would be reasonable. They actually took a while to make so don't say $1 -_- lol...

Our progress is going so slowly...i doubt we'll be able to make any sellable ones in time! we'll prob bail like we did for agideas -______-

My Mug List

Hey everyone ^^

Well atm, i'm on holidays :D..for those of you who don't know...I shall tell you again...
HOLIDAYS xD

I guess that's the bonus of doing design. Stress 24/7 but rewarded with a very long break =)

This holiday, I am planning to accomplish a lot. Theres so many things I plan to do...design wise, career wise and social wise. I seriously doubt i'll be able to fit it in 4 weeks, but i'll try my best.

I remember watching the Bucket list, and they had a really cool list of things to do. But since mine is short term..I think I'll just call it...err...mug list (not exactly opposite of a bucket but whatever lol.)

My Mug List

Plan A- DRAW MORE.
Every holiday I say I want to get commissions, and only ever get one. Josh if your reading this, I will finish yours THIS HOLIDAY! Sorry I left it so long -_-

But yes other than that one commission...I will have time to do lots more! I've come to realise that I have been quite lenient when it comes to payment on drawings. And although I feel guilty about asking people for money, being soft hearted on those sorta things will get me no where in life.

So yes, commissions from me are now open :D And...I will make sure that everything is sorted (like deadline, payment) before anything goes under hand. ^^ If you want me to draw or design something, give me a shout and I'll be willing to help! I might make a ebay/pay pal account soon lol....

Prices start at $10 (sketch) and go higher as size/medium increases...

Today i bought a nintendo magazine for my project.
Omgosh, it features the coolest games ever. I now have the urge to play games now xD

The animation above was quoted from the magazine. SO. AWESOME. The ending credits inspired this game called swords & soldiers which i really wanna play! (hints to wii owners :P)

Kinda reminds me of Spore x Worms gone crazy x that game we played at the acmi game expo with the knights (remember?). Plus it has cute chinese dynasty characters :D

I have been slightly obsessed with this song..especially the dance mv! Yes, that's all i've been doing today, watching korean dance mv's lol. But it's 13 Korean guys in suits! phwoar! Especially been smitten by the guy in sunnies lol- he's so mesmerising to watch ;)

Hrm haven't really been doing much hwk atm. Got a packaging project which i'm extremely stuck on. I thought it would be fun, but it's so techinical that the fun kinda died :<

Last week in illustration class, Ned showed us pictures of concept artists, which kinda got me thinking. He said that people who usually do rough sketchers are generally brilliant concept artists, but lack the ability to refine their work into finished pieces. On the other hand, people who can illustrate pieces with high techincal skills sometimes lack the substance of a concept sketch artist.

Hrm. I wonder which is better?

I usually can draw pretty decent concepts, but my finished works are always lacking techinically -__- I hope I won't be like this for the rest of my career. Although concept artists get pretty decent pay- $250 per image, x that by 7+ images for an advert storyboard KACHING $$$. Not bad ey? Although the advertising ones Ned showed us in class seem unfufilling...

Here's something I drew for illustration class. I might post all my work this semester. Gotta get recognised somehow!

Goal - Must refine technique. I'd rather people be in awe of something I poured my heart into rather then a 5 min sketch.

Totoro Forest Project

I heard about this project a few months ago...yet it was only today i stumbled across the website! This project is based on the animation "Totoro" (which i sitll haven't seen ._. ) and features illustrators/artists from around the globe who illustrate their own interpretation of it. Very inspiring and depressing at the same time....I wish I was hardcore!!!

Heh i thought this was cute. Peeping Totoro!!! All traditional as well!!! (depressed ._. )

Damn i feel so bad for not continuing my malaysia story -.- i kinda ran out of doodles to post up haha...i've been trying to post photos on blogspot, but for some reason it's nasty to me. Prehaps next time when i'm free i'll post them in photobucket and link back here ey?

Anyway...it seems this blog has turned into my "telling my life" blog. OH NOES how boring. But speaking of life, uni has started today! Got this incredibly difficult brief, but i'm glad we got a kool-ish laid back teacher for it(johnno was it?).

Hrmm...can't believe it's final year already. My goal is to be true(?) to my skills. No more boring corporate stuff. I just want to be an illustrator and draw for the rest of my life. ^^v

Malaysia Boleh! part II

Hrm i'm not sure who reads this ...but i'll just upload this for my own enjoyment before i forget my whole trip ^^". Prehaps one day when my memory is blur of this trip i can read this up again and relive the whole experience..i hope a flashback will happen.

Week 2
Spent in Melaka, my mum's hometown. Basically it's a historical town (world heritage apparently), lots of terrace houses, touristy spots, night markets and HAWKER FOOD :D. Also driving is extremely bad there >.>. Anyway because it was CNY week, we got to stay in the Mahkota Hotel, just opposite the mahkota & psomething shopping centre since grandmas house was full. It was a really nice hotel. The facilities were nice. (except for the washing machine ha!)..although i never got to utitlise them since i got kicked out of the pool for wearing a tshirt lol...but did go in the sauna! Didn't work properly though -.-"

During CNY had massive family dinner and also a tea ceremony :) Went to some random open house party (apparently full of msian police O_O) and witnessed (illegal?) fireworks which they lit infront of the house. Felt sorry for the car which was parked next to it though loll. Also received ang pow (hoorah!) and saw many lion dance perfomances. Also went malaysian bar hopping-ish with my cousin. Overall fun & festive week :)

Week 3
Travels between Melaka and Ipoh! In Melaka i saw this giant monitor lizard just sitting in the garden *spreads arms out wide* WAS. MASSIVE. Apparently it's always there and its normal to have giant lizards in backyards O_O...

After Melaka went to Ipoh to visit dad's side. Ipoh can be described as..hrmm retirement village. My grand aunt was the best chef there, always working hard...i think at one point we had 15 ppl staying over at once. Super chef woman! We always had kangpow chickens from the backyard. Was yum ^^ poor tasty chickens though. When we did eat out...i remember we went to this seafood restaurant my dad went as a kid. Had to drive through a jungle countryside to get it O_O haha...took about an hour. Then had to wait an hour for the food to cook afterwards! Was worth it though..had pro delicious fish and giant prawns. Giant prawns were huge (everything seems to double up in size in msia) which were meaty...but had a weird taste cause they were fresh water :S The restuarant was funny though...they had 2 shops on the opposite side of the road. The waiters had to walk across the street to deliver the beverages and food. Lucky it wasn't a busy town ^^

We also went to check out the limestone mountains. Had lots of buddhist statues inside. Was really beautiful. The low clouds kinda remind me of china scenery ^^ Saw a few wild turtles and monkeys around. Best thing about Ipoh, nice weather! Humidity = 0

Malaysia Boleh!

For those of you who don't know, I'm back from my malaysia trip!
Overall the experience was amazing ^^ Malaysia is definetely a place worth checking out for FOOD, ASIAN CULTURE, BAD ASIAN DRIVING AND SHOPPING!!!
Everything in malaysia is so convenient and the variety is incredible. Malaysian food is thumbs up to the max and there are soo many huge shopping centres you can seriously get lost. I also got taught by the best to haggle/bargain shop hahaha. Well here are some scans from my travel journal ^^ (yes i managed to keep one) I think i'll try and upload a few.

Last day in KL.
This one was from Genting, a casino/theme park in Malaysia highlands. Only an hour away from the capital and it was funnn! The pictures i drew were kinda true hahaha...especially the boat one!! It was one of those semi roller coaster ones..where it goes to the top and then zooms down and splashes you with water. 60 degree angle and it had no seatbelts, no chairs nothing accept handle bars for you to grab on O_O..so unsafe. Also visted this open shopping centre which had a disneyland figurine theme! Asian alert- there were soo many photo whores..but the figurines were really well done and of course being asian i posed with a few ^^"...Lastly i got to see the twin towers, second tallest in the world. Wow at night it really is beautiful. The architecture is amazing. From far it almost looks like a light ornament more than a building itself. Truly spectacular. I posed with it too ^^" hehe...

Things i remembered about malaysian culture. See the concept behind this is that the evil aussie sun (bowler hat and moustache indicated) has kidnapped me from my malaysian holiday. My relatives and malaysian culture friends are trying to vanquish him with their sad sad tears ...but unfortunately he has got an umbrella...genius ey? ;) Hopefully i'll be reunited with my chicken rice someday...*sigh* In the right top corner is my mum, dad and malay (burnt to toast) brother lol

Trying to get back in the habit of drawing again. Still going through my art block..but at least I have slight motivation to draw again.

So...I've decided to open up for commissions again to get my creative juices flowing ^^

Yesterday i saw Horton Hears a Who.
Aborable and funny movie :) The character designs for the dr seuss series are always so vivid and imaginative. I fell in love with it :) Definite must see!
